New Primary Curriculum
The New Primary School Curriculum.
The primary school curriculum is undergoing radical changes presently. The current curriculum which is now 25 years old no longer meets the needs of the 21st Century pupil. A new Primary Language Curriculum has already been introduced and a new Primary Maths Curriculum is presently being introduced. Over the coming years primary school pupils will spend more time learning foreign languages and STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths). They will experience a broader arts curriculum including dance and creative media and there will also be a greater emphasis on ‘wellbeing’ – that is social, personal and health education and PE. The amount of time allocated to the teaching of religion and Irish will reduce. The process of rolling out the curriculum in full is likely to take several years.
